Melting glaciers concern for NZ tourism…

The Franz Josef glacier is retreating and the impact is already having an impact on the way tourists interact with it. Wayne Costello from the Department of Conservation explains, “Over the last 5 years the glacier has retreated quite a bit, but it has also wasted away in terms of its thickness. In 2008 when I arrived here in Franz Josef the glacier would have been 10 or 20 meters above my head”, he says while sitting on a bare rock.

According to Heather Purdie of the Universtity of Canterbury, “Glaciers around the world including the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers are responding to warmer temperature and they are retreating.”    View video:
